The Life Of Catherine Malabou And Levi Bryant - 1631 Words

Catherine Malabou and Levi Bryant: A critical comparison of materialisms Speculative materialism arose in response to the post-Kantian philosophy of correlationism. Scholars have since debated the relationship of the perceived (object) and the perceiver (subject). Kant’s transcendental materialist philosophy supports what Quentin Meillassoux terms weak correlationism in that it allows for the thinking of the unknowable. However, strong correlationist (i.e. Heidegger and Hegel) refute that humans can escape their own thoughts, therefore making it impossible to know or even imagine that anything outside of the correlationist circle (objects in and of themselves) exists. Both Catherine Malabou and Levi Bryant can be seen as emphasizing speculative materialism in that they attempt to move beyond this subject-object correlate. While Malabou describes neuronal plasticity in What Should We Do With Our Brain, Bryant focuses on â€Å"machines† and their ontology in Onto-Cartography: An Ontology of Machines and Media. Malabou’s ultimate descr iption of the resistance and contradiction between the brain and mind fails to be accounted for by Bryant’s ontology and conception of â€Å"machines†. Bryant’s object oriented ontology does little to explain the origin of freedom in his â€Å"machines† (whereby we can begin to take charge of society); however, Bryant does suggest the use of thermopolitics to attack institutions. Together, Malabou and Bryant’s philosophies provide new ways of thinking about

Storm Born Chapter Fifteen Free Essays

string(54) " Her fingertips grazed my cheek, icy cold but gentle\." I don’t care how old you get or how tough you are. Nothing, nothing at all, can ever replace your mother taking care of you when you’re sick. The feel of a cool, wet cloth touched my head, and the sound of familiar humming just barely penetrated my weary brain. We will write a custom essay sample on Storm Born Chapter Fifteen or any similar topic only for you Order Now I opened my eyes and saw the same funny-shaped pieces of sunlight cast through my blinds onto the bedroom ceiling. Only this time, their positions had changed, their colors dimmer and darker orange. The humming abruptly stopped. â€Å"Eugenie?† â€Å"Mom,† I croaked. My throat felt torn and raw. She moved into my field of vision, face drawn with worry. I couldn’t believe it. She looked almost entirely normal. Her hair had a bit of a wind-swept look, and I could see a few bruises. Other than that, she seemed fine, not like she’d just endured a paranormal attack and subsequent magically induced maelstrom. For just a moment, I questioned my own memories. Had I imagined what happened? Had it been a trick or a vision? No. I felt like shit. No delusion could have caused this pain. â€Å"You’re okay?† I asked doubtfully. She nodded. â€Å"Fine. What about you?† I tentatively attempted to make contact with the muscles in my body. They told me to leave them the fuck alone. â€Å"I hurt.† She adjusted the cloth on my head, making it fractionally more perfect. As she leaned over, a lock of her hair slipped forward, and I made out muddy fingerprints on her neck. No. Definitely not my imagination. â€Å"I called Roland. He was up in Flagstaff with Bill. He’s on his way back now – should be here in a couple of hours.† â€Å"Mom†¦how’d you recover?† â€Å"What do you mean?† â€Å"You were really messed up from those spirits. Don’t you remember?† â€Å"I got a little shaken up but nothing worse. Nothing like you.† She frowned, giving a little sigh. â€Å"God, how I wish you were a lawyer instead. Or maybe a pharmacist.† â€Å"What do you remember happening?† â€Å"Not much,† she admitted. â€Å"I remember going after one of those†¦creatures. After that, it’s a blur. I must have panicked. Your living room is, uh, going to need some help.† I closed my eyes, feeling tired. My living room would probably need to be bulldozed and rebuilt from scratch. No telling how the rest of the house had fared. It could probably collapse at any moment. My room actually looked kind of normal. A few things were knocked over, probably casualties of stray gusts of wind. â€Å"You’ve got people here who want to see you.† I opened my eyes. â€Å"Who?† â€Å"No one I know. A man and a woman.† â€Å"Is the man a fox?† She stared at me, confused. â€Å"A fox? He’s very handsome, yes, but, sweetie†¦maybe I should send them away. You don’t sound like you’re better yet.† â€Å"No, no, let me talk to them.† I had a feeling the missing pieces of what had happened during and after the storm lay with Kiyo. â€Å"And I need to talk to them†¦alone.† My mother looked hurt. â€Å"It’s not personal. It’s business.† She started to argue, then shook her head and stood up. â€Å"I’ll go get them.† While she was gone, I dared a hasty assessment of my appearance. I was still in my underwear and camisole. The top in particular was ripped and dirty. I pulled the covers up almost to my neck and ran a hand over my hair and face. I could feel more dirt on my skin plus a scab on my cheek, distantly reminding me of a shard of something flying out and cutting me. My hair stuck out everywhere. I attempted to smooth it down, but then my mom returned with Kiyo and a strange woman. â€Å"I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me,† Mom said protectively. She pulled the door closed behind her, all but a crack. Kiyo’s face told me all I needed to know about the way I looked. â€Å"You should see the other guy,† I said. A small smile broke over his face. â€Å"I did. He’s in pieces in the other room.† â€Å"Oh.† He beckoned to the woman. â€Å"Eugenie, this is Maiwenn, queen of the Willow Land.† I started in surprise. She didn’t look like a Willow Queen. Of course, I’m not sure what exactly I expected – maybe something akin to Glinda the Good Witch. But this woman looked like Surfer Girl Barbie. Her skin glowed with a deep bronze tan. Platinum blond hair fell in supermodel waves to her waist. Her eyes were the color of the sea in the sun, blue-green with long lashes. She wore a simple blue dress, a bit old-fashioned but nothing that screamed, â€Å"I’m a fairy queen.† It was looser than the form-fitting gowns other gentry women seemed to favor but was still quite pretty. My feelings of inadequacy about my appearance increased tenfold. â€Å"Nice to meet you,† I said. I could hear the tentativeness in my voice. Kiyo might swear to her character, but I still carried a lot of apprehension around the gentry, monarch or no. â€Å"And you,† she said. Her voice was rich and sweet, her face serene. â€Å"I’m sorry I could not heal you too.† â€Å"‘Too’? Oh†¦was it you? Did you heal my mother? She doesn’t remember anything†¦.† She nodded. â€Å"I didn’t have the power to heal you both. She was more severely injured, and with your age and stamina – and your blood – well, I thought you’d have an easier time recovering.† I thought about the aches and pains shooting through my body. Easier? That might be a subjective term. â€Å"You made the right choice. Thanks. I’ll be fine.† Kiyo stuffed his hands in his pockets and leaned against the wall. â€Å"Eugenie doesn’t like to admit weakness. It’s one of her more charming traits.† I shot him a glare, and Maiwenn offered a small, polite smile. â€Å"Nothing wrong with that.† She approached me and extended a hand toward my face. â€Å"I think I have enough strength for a small healing. May I?† I nodded, not entirely sure what I was agreeing to. Her fingertips grazed my cheek, icy cold but gentle. A tingle ran through me, and she drew back, suddenly looking pale and tired. Kiyo started to help her when she stumbled, but she waved him off. â€Å"There. No scarring this way.† My fingers examined the place she had touched. No more scab. â€Å"Thank you.† Silence fell, and I looked from face to face. With me in bed and them hanging around so casually, I didn’t really feel like I was having a meeting with a bona fide queen. It was all so informal. â€Å"What happened?† They exchanged uncertain glances. â€Å"We’re not really sure,† he said. â€Å"You and your mother were both unconscious. The elemental was dead, and your living room†¦it looks kind of bad.† â€Å"But†¦that was it?† His eyebrows rose. â€Å"What more could there be?† â€Å"There was no storm when you showed up?† They exchanged conspiratorial looks again, and something about their solidarity rankled me. â€Å"Tell us what you remember,† Maiwenn said. I did, starting with the spirit attack and ending with the vicious storm. Neither spoke when I finished. Kiyo sighed. â€Å"What?† I demanded. â€Å"What happened? You obviously know.† â€Å"It’s complicated.† â€Å"Everything’s complicated lately. Let me guess. It was the magic, wasn’t it? Storm King’s inherited power?† He didn’t answer. She did. â€Å"Yes. It seems it has been passed down after all.† â€Å"Can I stop it? Keep it locked up so it doesn’t come out again?† â€Å"Not likely. You might be able to bury it so it isn’t consciously used, but†¦if it’s there, it’s likely to burst out again when your emotions let loose. You’ll get the same kind of disastrous results if you don’t learn to manage it.† â€Å"I don’t want it.† I shuddered, recalling that horrible blackness and deadly lightning. Uneasily, I remembered what Volusian had told me, that embracing my magic could protect me and those I loved. I looked at Maiwenn nervously, hating what I was about to ask. â€Å"But I don’t want to hurt anyone either. Can you teach me to use it? Or at least control it?† Kiyo’s eyes widened. â€Å"Eugenie, no – â€Å" â€Å"What do you expect me to do?† I demanded. The expression on his face mirrored what I felt inside. â€Å"It’s not like I want to do this. But you saw what happened. I destroyed my house, and worse, I nearly killed my mother. And myself.† He sighed but didn’t argue. Maiwenn regarded him calmly. â€Å"She’s right.† â€Å"I know. But I don’t have to like it.† â€Å"I don’t know if I can teach you or not,† she murmured, turning back to me. â€Å"Your magic – storm magic – is a very physical, outward sort of power. Healing is more internal. Less aggressive. Some of the basics will be the same, but we’ll probably have to find you a teacher with similar powers.† Like someone who can call up pieces of the earth and rip castles apart, I thought. I didn’t give voice to that. Kiyo and I might be â€Å"friends,† but I immediately knew he wouldn’t like me getting close to Dorian. â€Å"Kiyo says you’re against the invasion thing, that you weren’t a supporter of Storm King.† â€Å"Yes. That was part of the reason I wanted to meet you. I’m happy you survived today, Eugenie Markham, but†¦this possibility of the prophecy coming true alarms me. I’ve spent years believing Storm King had no children. Your existence causes all sorts of complications.† It occurred to me then that Maiwenn might have slept easier if I’d been killed today. â€Å"So is it true?† she asked. â€Å"You have no intention of fulfilling the prophecy?† â€Å"Of course not.† â€Å"Turning one’s back on such power can’t be easy. Even now, you’re considering his magic.† â€Å"That’s a necessity. I don’t want it. Besides, none of this is about power. It’s about keeping my world safe. You forget that until a few weeks ago, I had no clue about any of this. In most ways – me whipping up a storm aside – I still consider myself human. I’m not going to let some army subjugate or destroy my race.† â€Å"You see?† Kiyo said to her. â€Å"I told you.† I could still see the doubt on her face. â€Å"I’m serious. I don’t want to usher in some terrible era of gentry domination. I sure as hell don’t want to be a plaything for every gentry guy. And even if the worst happens† – I shuddered, remembering the elemental’s proximity – â€Å"well, there are ways of making sure I don’t actually get or stay pregnant.† I didn’t feel like getting into logistics with her. â€Å"Hopefully, I can just keep up the avoidance, though. I’m not jumping into anyone’s bed soon.† Sympathy replaced Maiwenn’s doubt. â€Å"Yes. I’m truly sorry for what you’ve endured. It sickens me. I honestly can’t imagine it. You’ve surpassed your fearless reputation. I couldn’t have coped so bravely.† I thought again about the terror that had filled me when the elemental had me trapped. The tears. The desperation. I didn’t know how brave I’d really been. Kiyo’s eyes met mine then, and while Maiwenn looked distracted with thought, I think he might have glimpsed a little of my emotion. Affection for me burned on his face, and I fell into it. The moment shattered when a loud voice sounded outside my room. â€Å"What the fuck happened in here? No way am I cleaning this up!† Kiyo straightened up, alarmed, but I waved away his concern. â€Å"Don’t worry. It’s just my housemate.† Sure enough, Tim burst in, outrage written all over him. He wore buckskin pants and a matching vest over his bare chest. Feathers decorated his black hair. Beads ringed his neck. His face fell as soon as he saw me. â€Å"Oh God, Eug. Are you all right?† I started to give him the â€Å"other guy† line, then opted for simplicity. â€Å"Fine.† He jerked his thumb behind him. â€Å"That room’s in pieces.† â€Å"I know. Don’t worry. I’ll clean it up.† â€Å"What happened?† â€Å"You’re better off not knowing. Tim, this is Kiyo and Maiwenn.† Remembering himself, Tim raised his right hand in a sort of â€Å"How, white man† kind of way. â€Å"I am Timothy Red Horse. May the Great Spirit smile down upon you.† This latter part seemed to be for Maiwenn in particular. She smiled formally. Kiyo appeared to oscillate between hilarity and disgust. Greetings done, Tim walked over to me, shaking his head ruefully. â€Å"You’re into some crazy shit.† â€Å"You might want to find another place to stay,† I said seriously. â€Å"I don’t think it’ll be safe around here.† â€Å"Are you kidding? I’m never going to find this good a deal. What’s a little death and destruction?† â€Å"Tim – â€Å" His face sobered. â€Å"Don’t worry, Eug. I know what you do. If things heat up, I’ll get out.† â€Å"Did you see the living room? That’s pretty hot.† â€Å"Yeah, but so long as the house is standing†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"You’re more difficult than I am.† I remembered I was supposed to find a witch to boost the wards around my house. I’d forgotten. Instead, I had created some wards of my own, but they weren’t very strong, as evidenced by the recent invasion. A witch couldn’t keep everything out but would do a better job than me. Tim grinned. â€Å"Well, let’s not get carried away. Anyway. You look like you’re in the middle of something. You want anything? Chicken soup? Foot massage?† â€Å"You can get me a Milky Way. And see if my Def Leppard CD survived the war zone.† â€Å"Don’t get your hopes up on that last one.† He said goodbye to the others and left. â€Å"An odd man,† mused Maiwenn. â€Å"You have no idea.† Yet, while Tim and I had bantered, I’d noticed Maiwenn and Kiyo speaking quietly to each other in the corner. She had rested a hand on his arm as they talked, and there had been something almost†¦intimate in the way they stood together. Like they were comfortable being in each other’s personal space. Very comfortable. I remembered Kiyo’s resolute support of her, his claim that he worked with her because he believed in her cause. But was that truly it? Or was there more? She was a â€Å"good friend.† They stood apart now, but a jealous, ugly feeling kindled in my chest. She finally turned away from him and gave me a small, tight smile. â€Å"I don’t mean to be rude, but†¦I’m not feeling well and must return home.† â€Å"It’s no problem. Thanks for coming, and†¦thank you for healing my mother.† Maiwenn nodded, and I could tell she really was sick. Weariness ringed those lovely eyes. â€Å"I’m happy to. And I’m glad we were able to talk. You have no idea how relieved I am to see where you stand. I’ll do what I can to keep others from trying to†¦take liberties with you.† Kiyo’s fingertips brushed her arm to stop her, and I watched that contact with a critical eye. â€Å"Wait for me outside.† She nodded and then swept out of the room in all her golden beauty. Kiyo walked over to my bed and sat down, running a hand along my cheek. â€Å"I’m glad you’re okay. When I walked in†¦I thought you were dead.† â€Å"I’m hard to kill,† I said lightly. He smiled, shaking his head with exasperation. â€Å"I can believe that.† Reaching down, he picked up my hand and brought it to his lips, eyes on mine. He lingered a moment, and my skin burned where he kissed me. Then carefully, gently, he laid my hand back down, lacing his fingers with mine. â€Å"I’m going to make sure she crosses over okay, and then I’ll be back to stay with you.† â€Å"You gonna take care of me? Massage my feet and feed me chicken soup?† â€Å"Anything you want,† he promised. â€Å"That’s what friends do.† He kissed my hand again and then stood up. â€Å"Be back in a few minutes.† I could still feel where he’d kissed me, but for once, my infatuation with him went on hold. I was thinking about the conversation I’d just had. It still bothered me, but I’d meant what I said. Learning gentry magic was about the scariest thing – other than rape by a mud elemental – that I could imagine right now. Yet, I wanted no more storms in my living room, no storms anywhere that I was incapable of controlling. And for what it was worth, that meant getting a grip on my power. I knew whom I had to go to for that control, and it held its own set of terrors. Necessary evils, though. I had no choice. So while I waited for Kiyo’s return, I began a mental to-do list. Summon Volusian. Plot strategy. Buy high-heeled shoes†¦ How to cite Storm Born Chapter Fifteen, Essay examples

World Vision Festival an Example by

World Vision Festival Working for World Vision is a very challenging task because you realize that the work you do is helping children, and you want to make sure you do your job in the best possible way. World Vision is dealing with such programs as child rescue, getting donations for children, sponsoring children. Every employee of World Vision is working very hard in order make sure children get as much support as possible. There are many children in need in the world, and therefore joint efforts have to be taken in order to protect them and help them if they are in need. Need essay sample on "World Vision Festival" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed In order to finance various kinds of programs for children which are held by World Vision Australia its very important to organize different kinds of events to attract the attention of public. The problem of raising money to sponsor children is not an easy task. People would like to grant money to rescue a child but they need to be consulted by employees of World Vision in order to make sure they are really helping a child. One of the ways to stimulate people to donate money to children through World Vision is by making suggestions on the website. World Vision Australias website shows different kinds of programs for children in which people can invest money- for example, rescue a child, make a donation, sponsor a child, help fight HIV/AIDS and others. Those users of internet who are interested in charity can go to such a website and find all the necessary information about the kind of support they are able to provide to children. However, not everybody looks for this information on internet, therefore it was decided by the team of World Vision Australia that a festival had to be organized in support of the organization. The festivals slogan is going to be: World Vision- providing help for children worldwide. The festival is going to take place on November 5th, therefore it was very important for us to schedule all the events of the festival as fast as possible, advertise it through the use of mass media, and most importantly, find decent sponsors. According to the management suggestion, the best sponsors for this kind of festival were going to be Just Juice, Tip Top, and Frucore. Since I was the leader of the project, it was my task to negotiate with the representatives of the companies about their participation in the festival and their possible donations for the kids whom World Vision Australia supports. The amount of funds which had to be raised during the festival had to be not less than enough to sponsor 50 children per year. Therefore, it was very important to make sure sponsors agreed to take part in the festival. In order to persuade the sponsors in the necessity of their participation in the festival, I needed to present a detailed plan of the festival and its goals. All the information was printed out and presented to the sponsors. The plan of street festival included the following events: 10 a.m. -11 a.m. Faire of toys and other handicraft made things made by volunteers to raise funds for the World Vision organization; 11 a.m. 1 p.m. Concert of children (dancing, singing, performing different kinds of plays); 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Concert of a popular rock group. 3 p.m.- 5 p.m. Sports competitions in different kinds of sports. The most important point in persuading the sponsors to participate in the festival was to make the sponsor realize what benefits he was doing to have from the participation. The benefits which were going to attract the sponsors included the reduction in taxes which they would get from the government by participating in the festival; developing the image of organizations due to their participation in philanthropic activities. It was also very important to make sure that the sponsors could advertise their companies during the festival. Therefore, it was agreed upon that during the festival, the people leading it would be mentioning the names of the sponsors very frequently, as well as put many slogans with their names in the area where the festival was going to take place. The sponsors also made sure that the even was covered in mass media (radio, newspapers, and most importantly television). In the result of negotiations, there were no objections of Just Juice, Tip Top and Frucore to their participation in the event. On the contrary, they wanted to make large donations to the children in need and especially those who were sick with AIDS. The sponsors also agreed to finance the invitation of a popular rock group to the festival which was one of the crucial questions in the festival. In order to attract the most public, it was necessary to invite a popular rock-group so that many people would come for the sake of the group but decide to donate money to children in need after participating in all the events at the festival. Therefore, the financial support of 3 major sponsors was very important for the festival. The money obtained from the sponsors enable World Vision to employ people who wanted to work during the festival in the promotion of its activities, and made sure all the preparations for the festival could be held at the highest level. Iphone Bb Essays Iphone Bb Essay Iphone Bb Essay Battle between iPhone and BlackBerry iPhone and the BlackBerry competition’s may have become an old story for anyone. As we know, the BlackBerry dominates the market until Apple launched its revolutionary product, iPhone. iPhone and BlackBerry, are two successful leading mobile phone, but differ in terms of features and appearance. Even until now, still a major consideration for buying an iPhone or a BlackBerry. Some differences of these two brand new phone are. IPhone’s design is a revolutionary   design in the world of mobile phones. Blackberry has a ood and smart display but not as pretty as the iPhone. If style is major consideration in buying a mobile phone, the iPhone is the right choice for you. IPhone is a combination of elegance and beauty design. E-Mail Service of Blackberry is the best. Blackberry using Microsoft Exchange Server with Push Email service that quickly download messages from mobile phones and BlackBerry has LED indicates that new messages have been received by your BlackBerry. Unlike the iPhone which shows new messages in 15 minutes and should be checked by the active user. Any discussion about the iPhone is not complete yet without talking about their great applications. Blackberry does not provide sufficient access for BlackBerry application developers. The impact is outdated and uninteresting applications . While the iPhone is the easiest device to develop applications. No wonder when you buy the iPhone, millions applications have been waiting for you to be downloaded. The Blackberry browser is too primitive compared to safari of the iPhone. But safari is run slower than Blackberry’s browser via The Edge. Every Blackberry (except Storm) has a QWERTY keyboard which extremely qualified and accurate in typing. While the iPhone uses a virtual keyboard, which we must learn hard to get used to it. Fortunately, the iPhone’s screen is supported with the best touch screen in the world. iPone is not only a mobile phone but also a multimedia device. Comfort in the use of music and video is still the best among the other mobile devices. Plus, many iPhone applications which maximize the function of iPhone multimedia itself makes iPhone different from the ther. Although, we can said that the default applications is quite disappointing. For Blackberry, The advantage in multimedia is camera. The camera is still better than iPhone. The battery on iPhone is a fairly complicated problem. iPhone is a smart phone that supported by many applications. The iPhone battery should be able to support these performance but the fact is still not as smooth as it should. Many improvements carried out by Apple on this issue and also a lot of complaints about this. Unlike the Blackberry, which s never get any complain about the battery issue. Blackberry users can perform tasks faster with shortcut keys. While iPhone   most tasks need to do   step by step because not many buttons provided to do the shortcuts. For my conclution, if you choose iPhone for your mobile iphone : â€Å"Beauty is Painfulâ€Å". If you are a text-message lover my suggestion will be Blackberry. If you love entertainment, iPhone won’t disappointing you. If you are simple person, Blackberry is a great choice, Finally if style is your major problem, you absolutely will love iPhone.

Analyze the behavior style of the participants in both group and Term Paper

Analyze the behavior style of the participants in both group and individual situations.(CBS reality show Survivor) - Term Paper Example It is the most commonly used test for personality worldwide. It classifies individuals according to four dichotomies i.e. extroverts vs. introverts, sensing vs. intuitive, thinking vs. feeling and judging vs. perceiving (McShane & Von Glinow, 2015). Shirin can be described as an extrovert because she is very social. In an interview, she admits that she prefers making relationships based on friendship (Holmes, 2015). Shirin is also a sensitive person. Her background career as a product manager shows that she prefers having practical solutions rather than relying on intuition. Her character in the reality show also echoes the same about her. She can also be classified as a thinking rather than feeling person. People who fit into the feeling character are usually guided by their emotions rather than logic and reason. Being emotional is a character that she evidently thinks is not suitable for anyone with a role in the show (Holmes, 2015). However, she can be classified as a perceiving person. Perceiving people are spontaneous and easily adapt to change. Her personality as seen in the show as well as her character outside the show portrays her as a person who is flexible enough to make changes when necessary. The model proposes that human personality can be classified broadly into five dimensions. A lot of research has also showed that the model is effective in predicting the performance of an individual in the workplace (Barrick & Mount, 1991). The five factors are openness, emotional stability, extroversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. Under each factor is a list of related behavior and qualities that can describe the person. In the case of Shirin Oskool, we can conclude that personality fits in the extroversion category. Extroverts are usually outgoing people and mostly derive their energy from external sources (Laney, 2002). Also, they tend to be enthusiastic, energy-oriented, and possess high group visibility and like to talk.

Argument - Essay Example They were able to do so because of their advance military and naval technology compared with the natives’. The natives didn’t have exposure to the viral or bacterial diseases the Spanish had with them this led to their dead in large numbers. The locals who resisted their rule were captured and sold as slaves in plantations (Todorov 30). The main reason for European invasion of Africa in the fifteenth to seventeenth century was trade and specifically human trade. By this time most of Africa’s traditional institutions were unaffected. Trade between the European and Africans led to the development of towns in the coastal regions. The Africans were also introduced to commodities like salt, weapons and clothes. The Dutch were the first to establish permanent colonies around1652 in South Africa. Later in the nineteenth century, European explorers discovered that Africa contained exploitable resources like gold, silver, iron and was fertile for agricultural production. This led to the Scramble of Africa. There was exchange of ideas, values and practices as a result of trade and colonisation. Missionaries had an important role to play in the integration of European culture into Africa and Americas. The colonisation of Africa and Americas led to the introduction of Christianity to these societies. The people were forced to abandon their cultural practices since they were considered primitive. There was the introduction of formal education. The natives were taught the languages of their colonial master, arithmetic and science (Cowen 145). The political systems of the Americas and African communities were disregarded. The Europeans also made boundaries that divided communities and even families. The natives were forced to accept the rule of their conquerors and pay taxes which were usually oppressive. The other consequence of European conquest was ecological destruction of the Indies and Africa. The settlers cut down the

Of mice and men Coursework Essay Example for Free

Of mice and men Coursework Essay I have been given the following question what does the novel show the reader about the authors view of the American dream? The novel mice and men written by john steinbeck examines two main characters George and Lennie who are travelling together in the hope of a successful dream. In my opinion the book strongly refers to the American dream and portrays how desperate they are for the dream to materialise. The American dream is constructed on the theme that anyone can achieve success so long as they work hard enough. The dream originated when many people immigrated to America. The majority of people leaving the countries were lower class people. The conditions virtually meant that the country would make them lower class for life. When Europeans left for America they were told that everyone would be landowner, they would live like kings and the streets were paved with gold. Everybody would live equally. This was a wonderful dream for the Europeans fleeing from the class system of their home countries. This soon became known as the American dream and had a huge influence on the American society, with hard working and strong willed people. In the book George and Lennie share a dream together, and this dream has several elements that refer to the American dream. George and Lennie believed that if they worked hard enough and ran up a stake they would be in a position to own their own farm. In the very first chapter George describes the dream when he tells lennie we are going to have a little house and a couple of chickens and a couple of acres of land and a cow and some pigs. At this moment lennie would interrupt and shout an live off the fatta the land. An have rabbits. Lennie was most excited and enchanted by the dream, as he would constantly ask George to tell him about rabbits. George tells lennie not to tell anyone about the dream; you almost get the feeling that George thinks that if the dream is shared the dream will be lost. This is shown when George says to lennie Dont tell nobody about it. Jus us three an nobody else. They lible to can us so we cant make no stake. However, because of the special bonding between George and lennie there is an aura about them that says the dream will be successful. This is typified when lennie says that the dream will have an happy ending because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you and that why. This continues to show that they have the belief and desire for the dream to succeed. In the novel candy an old swamper who works on the ranch also has a dream Candys dream is to have security. Security in his job, that he wont be sacked because hes getting too old, or because hes useless because hes only got one hand, this normally wouldnt effect someone now but in the time the book was set Candys chance of getting a job if he was sacked from the ranch would be minute. Because of this insecurity Candy is very scared of Curly and the boss. In the book when Curly first meets George he speaks nicely about the boss and said that at Christmas he gave them whisky. I think he lied to George about the boss in case George told the boss what he had said which would have been true but nasty. When the boss comes into the room Candy quickly makes up an excuse why hes talking to George and Lennie and gets back to work. He did this because he doesnt want to get in any trouble with the boss because the boss might sack him. Then Candy will have no job and will be too old to get another one in addition to this he cant retire and because he doesnt have any family to go to hell probably have to live on the streets. When he accidentally overhears George and lennie discussing the dream Candy wants to go along and be involved to. Now Candy thinks hes going to be leaving the ranch soon to go with George to his dream farm, his attitude towards Curly, the Boss and Curlys wife changes. When Curly starts on Lennie, Candy quickly rushes to his defence. Glove fulla Vaseline, he said disgustedly Referring to the glove Curly wears on his hand to keep soft for his wife. He is not scared of Curly and the boss anymore because if he gets sacked he feels he can just move on to Georges dream farm. With Candys newfound confidence he starts sharing his views and sticking up for other people such as Crooks the black stable buck. Curlys wife is verbally attacking Crooks, telling him how she can get him killed if she wanted too. Candy retaliates by saying, If you was to do that, wed tell Wed tell about you framing Crooks. He sticks up for Crooks, which shows he wasnt racist and that he also had a dream for a better society. This is that when you have worked and are getting old you would have money, a pension, and that everyone is treated equally like him and Crooks. This shows that the book reflects the time its set because Candy would probably have a pension and wouldnt have been able to get sacked without out a just cause in our time. Crooks is an illustration of the way in which loneliness can corrupt and destroy a man. Crooks has a double burden, he is not only a Negro in a society that immediately relegates non-whites to a sub-human status, but also a partial cripple in a society that values human beings simply on their ability to provide a service. Crooks dream is to be treated like a human and be accepted in society. Because hes black hes always been bullied and picked on by most of the others. Candy, George and Lennie are the only ones who dont regard Crooks as sub-human. Candy describes him as a nice fella. He is never allowed to go out with the other people in the ranch and has to stay in his own room in the barn, he hates everyone at the ranch because they treat him badly, he says to Lennie, They play cards in there, but I cant play because Im black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, you all stink to me. While talking to Lennie, Crooks reminisces of his childhood. How his father owned a chicken ranch and the white children used to come and he would play with them, and how most of them didnt care about the colour of his skin and that they were nice to him. He recalls Instead of how he slept all alone now, he used to sleep with his two brothers. They was always near me, always there. Used to sleep right in the same room, right in the same bed-all three. He was happy in the past, dignified, because he wasnt alone and he was treated equally and he wants that back. In the whole novel we never hear the name of Curleys wife, she is always referred to as Curleys wife. This makes her sound like she is Curleys property, like Curleys shoes or Curleys horse. Maybe she doesnt deserve one, maybe that if she married Curley she would get a name. This reflects on her dream of equal rights for women. She is a very lonely person; she has no one to talk to except the men on the ranch who dont really listen to her. So to make them listen to her, or pretend to in most cases, she dresses provocatively to get attention. However Candy and others see her as a tart and shes always giving the eye. Even Curly doesnt notice her; he still goes out to the cat houses with the other ranch workers, instead of staying with his wife. She seems to be hurt by this, she says. Think I dont know where they all went?. I know where they all went. Curleys wifes dream is to be a star, when she was young, she was asked to go on a show, but her mother wouldnt let her. Film work was one of the few types of work you could get as a woman, it was every girls dream, but it was often only a scam to take advantage of young women. Curleys wife remembers how a man in the pitchers said he was going to write to her about being in the movies. But she says her mother stole the letter when it came, when really it didnt come at all. When Lennie killed her the writer says. The meanness and.. the ache for attention were all gone from her face. This means that she didnt have to try anymore and life wasnt just one long struggle for recognition. She had been released and was now more beautiful and alive than ever. However, from the moment Curleys wifes neck was broken George realised that Curley will want Lennie lynched and, even worse, that their dream had been shattered by Lennies actions. When George finally caught up with Lennie they discussed the dream one last time before George took Carlsons lugar and shot him. He was dead. To conclude I would say that the author has a very negative view of the American dream. All these dreams failed, George will never get his farm with Lennie, Crooks and Curleys wife will never have equal rights to a white man and Candy will always be in fear of losing his job.

Essay --

Change within any company is sometimes needed whether you want it or not. Everything around us is always changing even when we aren’t paying attention to it. The world is forever evolving and change is needed in order to keep up with the times. Organizations need change in order to keep growing and keep its employees and customers interested. Change means taking someone out of their comfort zone and imposing a new set of rules, disciplines or policies that are unknown to them. History has shown that only one approach works, for a company to stay relevant in this time of economic recession and that is change. The only company that I know very well is the casino that I worked for. There were many things that could have been changed to make the experience for customers and employees better. When you work at a casino there are so many different departments that are within that organization that there are many changes that you can make to help your company. I worked in the audit/money room. There were so many things that my department could have changed to make our job more safe and easier but they didn’t because they were so accustomed to how they had been doing things that they didn’t want to take the time out to learn something new. The managers just didn’t understand that things needed to be changed in order to evolve. â€Å"Change is the only thing that is consistent in business. Knowing how to manage change is the difference between successfully taking advantage of the opportunities it provides and letting it drag you down. Flexibility has its role in managing ch ange and organizations benefit from embracing flexibility.†(Laura Bramble, ehow.com) Commonly, some people fear what they do not understand, that of which is new and set ap... ...arge that deserved to be in charge and not people that they just liked because they were friends. This happened all the time. This should go for any organization. You need to have people in charge that knows what is going on at all times. You should never bring in someone that don’t know anything about a position and give them the leadership role. â€Å"Once formed, your "change coalition" needs to work as a team, continuing to build urgency and momentum around the need for change. What you can do: 1. Identify the true leaders in your organization, as well as your key stakeholders. 2. Ask for an emotional commitment from these key people. 3. Work on team building within your change coalition. 4. Check your team for weak areas, and ensure that you have a good mix of people from different departments and different levels within your company.†(Heraclitus, Greek philosopher)

Passion in Education Essay

What came first, the chicken, or the egg? A question in which many would say the chicken, because without the chicken, the egg wouldn’t be there. Others might say that the egg came first because chickens come from eggs, so without the egg, the chicken wouldn’t even exist. Its not the fact of which came first in this situation, rather than how they go hand in hand. Both the egg and the chicken need each other to be complete, just like teachers, and students. Teachers need students for educational purposes, and students need teachers to learn. The idea of â€Å"can there be education without passion? † is a debatable topic especially since some students might say that it’s the teacher’s job to make the class interesting and gain their interest. Teachers on the other hand might suggest that it’s up to the students to care enough about their education to motivate themselves to learn from the curriculum, no matter how tough, or dry the education may be. In the sense of coming together for a common cause passion is required to learn and succeed in school, but teachers also need passion to successfully teach their students. Patrick Sullivan, an English teacher at Manchester Community College in Connecticut, author of â€Å"A Lifelong Aversion to Writing†: What If Writing Courses Emphasized Motivation† expresses the idea that teachers need to attain the interest of their students and teach them the criteria in ways that the students understand it, and feel the need to learn it, but he also believes that the students themselves need to develop Intrinsic motivation. â€Å"Students who are engaged and motivated learn almost effortlessly. Those who are not almost always struggle, resist, and often fail. Unmotivated students also often become disruptive and troublesome influences in our classrooms† (Sullivan, 120 ). Students who put forth the effort needed to succeed in a classroom tend to do better than those who don’t. Without that inner passion to learn what a teacher is teaching, the student won’t learn. A teacher could come up with the best, most interactive lesson plan, but if the motivation isn’t there for a student, then all the teachers’ efforts are for nothing. Not all the blame can be put on the teachers. Some students just are not willing to learn, and continue with their education. College classrooms are filled with students who do not prepare for class. Many study less than 10 hours a week – that’s less than half the hours they spent studying 40 years ago. Paradoxically, students are spending more and more money for an education that seems to deliver less and less content† (Stuart Rojstaczer). Most students in college don’t put forth the effort needed to fully captivate everything a college class is giving, and it’s not because the education isn’t there, but that the students are not motivated to learn because they see that with little effort, they can pass their classes, and don’t need to study their brains out. The blame can’t only lie with the students either. Without teachers being passionate about teaching, then students won’t grasp the concept of what is being taught to them. â€Å"It is essential that English teachers begin to engage this research carefully and begin developing curriculum designed specifically to promote and nurture motivation† (Sullivan, 120). Without intrinsic motivation students won’t learn well, but it lies on the teachers as well to motivate students to want to learn, and to want to pursue their education. Students need to see where motivation can get them, for them to want to motivate themselves. Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire. â€Å"The presence or absence of this â€Å"fire,† of course, affects everything students experience in classrooms† (Sullivan, 120). If teachers don’t make the class interesting and engage the students, then they won’t feel the need to motivate themselves to learn what is being taught. How they feel about the class effects how they learn. If they dislike a certain subject, they’ll always approach the subject with a bad mentality, and with that mentality, it will affect how they learn. In the attempt to attract students teachers have â€Å" loosen[ed] up. [They] grade much more softly than [their] colleagues in science. In English. [they] don’t give many D’s or C’s for that matter† (Edmundson). Students wont learn any better If teachers make the class easier, and in no way is that way of teaching ethical. Student’s wont try harder, or be more interested in the class. They will simply slack off even more and take the class as a joke. Teacher’s need to find a balance between making the class understandable, yet understanding. Dumbing it down, and passing students who don’t deserve the grade will make the class pointless and nothing will come from it. I have yet to find a teacher who teaches just to teach. They all want to make an impact on their student’s lives, and dumbing down courses wont help anyone. Neither the teachers nor the students are to blame for lack of passion in education. They both have to do their job as either a teacher who teaches English, or a student who is in an English class. The teacher has to engage the students to want to learn, and the student has to have motivation to want to learn what the teacher is teaching. If either of the jobs is lacking, then the likelihood of a student or teachers success is lower than if both were giving it their all. They both go hand in hand, and one wouldn’t be complete without the other just like the chicken and the egg. A teacher doesn’t teach an empty classroom now do they? They teach students for a reason, so that the students learn, but if the students are just sitting in the classroom, not paying attention or do not come prepared, then they might as well teach to thin air, because no one is benefiting from what the teacher has to offer.

Health Care Management Essay

Roles and Functions Management is a major component in every organization. Management is â€Å"the process of organizing, planning, controlling the use of resources, and leading to accomplish performance goals† (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & kramer, 2007, p. 5). Most managers follow similar roles and functions that help ensure that the organization flow is steady and business moves along smoothly. In the health care setting management have four major functions in which the managers facilitate so that workers can work toward common goals. All managers, regardless of level are responsible for the following functions: organizing the process of delegating, allowing, and coordinating, planning the process of determining actions, performance objectives, and decision maker. Controlling the process of comparing results, taking corrective actions, and gather and interpret work performance, and last leading the process of building commitments, encouraging activities that supports company goals, and fulfill and accomplish objectives. The four major functions has helped, organizations globally to achieve high performance goals and quotas. For most business, high productivity measures organizational success, and the managers are responsible for ensuring its achievement. In the organization in which I work, I witness all four of the functions used daily. My managers each day organize schedules to accommodate the senses. If the senses are low than the managers will have to cut the labor when mean send workers home earlier. I have witnessed my manager plan in ahead by adding extra people to schedule to ensure productivity. As we any organization there are workers who attempts to defy the organizations rules, but I have seen first had how the managers use function of control to restore order. Leading in the organization in that I work for is one in which I am leery about. Allow me to rephrase the leaders who manage my department are questionable. The leaders in this organization could be success but they do not have worked ethics about themselves, but  that is not the issue here. Applying these functions at the organization, which I am employed, if properly trained can enhance, the unity of the organization, the flow, and the line of communication. Health care management and leaders value a diversified workforce. Workforce diversity â€Å"describes demographic differences among employees, principally differences in age, race, ethnicity, able-bodies, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation† (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & kramer, 2007, p.5). The organization I work for is overwhelmingly cultural diverse and its enjoyable. Yet there are always barriers, such barriers as prejudice, including absurd notion of other associates who are unlike themselves. Its discrimination, and it can result in the glass ceiling affect it prevents the less likely and minorities from exceling. This is a horrible characteristic to have, but it happens way too often. The most significant aspect related to health care management that I hope to gain from taking this course better time management, and to develop leadership skills. I hope that I can be a manager who can empower associates and have a common goal. Reference Lombardi, D. J., Schermerhorn, J. R., & kramer, B. Email vs. E-mail

Email vs. E-mail Email vs. E-mail Email vs. E-mail By Mark Nichol Once upon a time, one could speak or write about such media as books and mail, or use such terms as business and commerce, and your audience would immediately understand what you were referring to. But then, toward the end of the twentieth century, came a revolution in how humans conduct social behavior, academic pursuits, and business transactions- activities now often mediated through an electronic device. As humans adapted to personal computers, cell phones, and related technology, our language concurrently evolved. One result was the invention of a new prefix: The letter e soon appeared in front of existing words as an abbreviation of electronic to express that the term refers to an action accomplished using a computer (or, later, related devices such as cell phones and tablets). But for a time, how that prefix was attached was a matter of some disagreement. Should a hyphen be employed, or should the term be considered a closed compound? â€Å"Electronic mail,† which originally referred to any electronic document-transmission method, including production of facsimiles (also known as faxes), dates back to the 1960s, and in the early 1970s, the abbreviation was codified in the computing world as email. However, even though in the 1990s, the then new but quickly influential magazine Wired championed this closed form, though as the process became widely available, many publications used diverse variations, including e-mail, E-mail, and Email. The Chicago Manual of Style, which in general sensibly favors minimizing the use of hyphens in prefixed terms, recommends e-mail and the like (except in proper names such as eBay). The Associated Press Style Book switched to email a few years ago after steadfastly mandating e-mail, though e-commerce and all other e-words remain hyphenated. (The capitalized forms, thankfully, never quite caught on.) Merriam-Webster’s, which generally mirrors Chicago’s hyphenation policy, lists e-mail, with email as a variant. So, which form should prevail? As always, the options are, if you’re self-publishing or you’re compiling a house style guide for a company or organization, to decide for yourself and stick to one or the other, or to go with the form preferred by a company or organization you are writing for or submitting writing to. If the former alternative pertains to you, however, consider that email is only the most prominent among a class of similarly structured words with e attached to book, commerce, learning, and so on, and consistency is a virtue. Therefore, if e-mail, then e-book and so on. If email, then ebook and so on. (And never capitalize the e or the first letter of the root word unless the prefixed word is a brand name.) My recommendation is, though I generally favor omitting prefix hyphens, to consider the aesthetics and avoid such infelicities as etail (â€Å"electronic retail,† meaning â€Å"online retail†) and ewaste (â€Å"electronic waste,† referring to discarded electronics). (I would avoid such prefixed terms altogether in favor of the long forms, but this may not always be desirable.) Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Cat in the Rain Essay Example for Free (#2)

Cat in the Rain Essay Cat in the Rain is a short story about an American couple on vacation to Italy. They are in their first year of marriage. The husband has a dismissive attitude towards the wife and the wife always wants more. In the story the couple has a lot of selfishness going on in their relationship. The husband ignores his wife’s needs and the wife and the wife is not satisfied with her husband. The theme of this story has a lot to do with loneliness in the couples’ relationship. In this story the American couple is trapped in their hotel room with nothing to do because of the raining weather. The husband wants to read and ignore his wife. So the wife is looking out the window and sees a cat crouched from the rain. She wants to go downstairs and get the cat. She tells her husband about it and he shrugs it off. The wife goes down herself and the story talks a lot about how she likes the inn keeper. I find that this part of the story most affected me when the husband ignored his wife’s wants and needs. She really wanted that cat because it was something for her to do and feel good about. Her husband obviously doesn’t satisfy her which makes her feel lonely and the cat would keep her company. The wife in this story wants to feel appreciated and loved like any other woman would. Being married for their first year is beginning to be hard for them. Hemingway tries to tell about a first marriage of a couple he once knew and how hard it is for some to always keep that happiness. Couples always have disagreements but should never feel alone. A husband should not ignore his wife’s needs and in this story that is what he does instead of trying to satisfy his wife. Close to the ending of this story the wife was not able to find the cat. She came back in the hotel room very sad. She tries to tell her husband but he does not listen. She starts complaining about what she wants to change about herself. She wants â€Å"her hair to be long so she can brush it† and she wants a cat. The husband can only say that he likes things the way they are. He tells her to shut up. He does not care what the wife’s needs are or what she wants. He does not want to listen and he just wants to read which is what he wishes she would do. This part of the story really interested me because I could not get as to why the husband doesn’t respond to what she asks for. The wife desperately wants attention and he is not giving it to her. The story of the American couple explains a lot about how the wife tries to get attention from the husband. Hemingway talks about a cat but behind that cat this story means more. The lack of attention her husband gives her may make her feel that she is restricted on expressing herself and keeps most of her feelings inside. The cat stays compact to stay dry outside, which is how the wife feels she has to be with her husband to make him happy. She hides herself constantly from him. In this story it relates to her as American wife and never tells her name. This kind of says that she is nothing but an American wife which is exactly how she feels. Hemingway had a unique way of telling the story but the way he told it had a lot of meaning to it. He showed the couples loneliness in a different way. Cat in the Rain. (2016, Dec 19).

Terrorism on the Internet Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Terrorism on the Internet - Essay Example The attack on the World Trade Center was one where terrorists wreaked an unprecedented level of destruction and the attention of the world was drawn sharply to the dangers posed by the terrorist threat. Sterne (2003) defines terrorism as â€Å"as an act or threat of violence against noncombatants with the objective of exacting revenge, intimidating, or otherwise influencing an audience.† Over the years, the face of terrorism has changed – it is no longer restricted to state sponsored terrorism, but has evolved into specialized local cells, with individual terrorist elements spreading threat in order to achieve their own selfish political or other ends. Sterne clarifies that in this context, terrorism is not the kind of enemy that can be combated on an all out open combat basis. She defines terrorism as â€Å"a kind of virus, which spreads as a result of risk factors at various levels: global, interstate, national and personal."[www.buzzflash.com]. With increasing globalization, the use of the Internet has widened to encompass a new sphere of activities that are facilitated through the electronic medium{Kusher 1998). It is now possible to achieve on an individual basis, a scope of activity that would have previously necessitated the availability of a vast amount of resources and several people. But through the cheap electronic medium, it has become possible for computer savvy individuals to engage in several criminal and terrorist activities that are characterized by the compromising of sensitive information and by large scale destruction. Since most commercial and Government activity has now become e-based, terrorists can cause a great deal of damage by hacking into the databases of Government organizations.
